About Dialysis
If dialysis is needed, it has a major impact on your life. That is why it is nice if dialysis suits your situation as best as possible. We pay a lot of attention to this in our Dialysis department. We offer various forms of dialysis, such as hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
Dialysis often must take place in the hospital. If you wish, you can perform your own dialysis treatment in our department. Depending on your medical condition, you can also dialyze at home.

Contact
Do you have any questions or would you like more information? You can contact the dialysis department, telephone number (+599) 715-8912 (front desk).
The dialysis department
In the dialysis department, kidney specialists (nephrologists) work in a treatment team together with dialysis nurses, physician assistants, dieticians, social workers and technicians.
Predialysis Consultation Hours
If it is clear that your kidney function is deteriorating to such an extent that dialysis will be necessary in the near future, your GP or treating specialist will refer you to our pre-dialysis consultation. Here the kidney specialist prepares you for the dialysis period. He works together with the dialysis nurses, dietitian and social worker. You will receive guidance to keep the loss of kidney function as stable as possible and information about the different forms of dialysis. This way you can choose the most suitable form of dialysis. If your medical condition is good enough, we will also discuss with you whether you want a kidney transplant. If you wish, tests will be carried out to assess whether you are eligible for such a transplant.
What is Hemodialysis (HD)
With hemodialysis, you are connected to an artificial kidney (hemodialysis machine) several times a week for several hours. Your blood then flows through the artificial kidney and is purified. The excess water and salt are flushed from your body and you get rid of waste products. This form of dialysis requires access to a blood vessel. The surgeon will create a large, superficial blood vessel for this purpose. That’s called a shunt. Blood can be taken from this blood vessel during any dialysis. The shunt is punctured for this purpose.
In addition to the explanation that we as dialysis nurses like to give, there is now also an information video to watch at home in 4 minutes what steps there are for a good and safe hemodialysis treatment.
What is Peritoneal Dialysis (PD)
Another form of dialysis is abdominal irrigation (peritoneal dialysis). We use the peritoneum for this. The irrigation fluid is introduced into the abdominal cavity via a catheter. There it naturally attracts (via the peritoneum) waste products, salt and excess fluid and removes them from the bloodstream. You can do peritoneal dialysis at home or with the help of home care. Fundashon Mariadal trains home care workers to perform this abdominal irrigation. That is why we can offer peritoneal dialysis to many patients.
Dialysis Room
This means that you receive your dialysis treatment at fixed times and at a fixed location. The treatment lasts 3 to 4 hours, usually 3 times a week. You come to the hospital by taxi or your own transport.
Home Dialysis
For some patients, home dialysis is an option. This allows you to determine the time of the treatment yourself. You also do not have to go to the hospital for your dialysis treatment. In addition, multiple dialysis sessions per week or longer dialysis sessions are possible. Unfortunately, this form of dialysis is not suitable for everyone. If you are eligible for home dialysis, you will receive training from the dialysis nurse. The training lasts 2 to 3 weeks.
